U.S. Universities Face Ongoing Decline in R&D Funding

U.S. universities face an ongoing decline in federal research and development funding, according to new data from the National Science Foundation.

For the third consecutive year, federal research and development funding for higher education lagged behind inflation. Federally funded R&D at universities declined 3.9% to $37.9 billion in FY 2014. It has fallen by more than 11% since fiscal year 2011.
